500 Portraits Photo: portrait in Faversham window 2009

500 unique, 10cm sq., paintings of a Faversham man, gifted by artist Jill Holder to 500 local residents are now displayed in the windows of their homes.
Having created 500 paintings of a Faversham man Jill Holder has broken out of the normal art world confines of galleries to gift the work directly, and randomly, to ordinary residents of her town, with a simple request to show them in their windows. Now many of the recipients have created a fascinating and different form of exhibition. Some paintings are changing hands as people swap them and even sell them on, particularly after BBC South East news featured the story. Jill is delighted by the success of the project in making art connect with people at street level. She said “I long to generate more interest and understanding of fine art with the general public. It's something for everyone not just the gallery going few, and this is a small step towards that.”

Many thanks to all those residents who are taking part.
